Jonathan Slifka Chairs Hospital for Special Care 25th Anniversary Ivan Lendl Golf Classic

February 10, 2020

Jonathan Slifka of West Hartford will chair the Hospital for Special Care (HFSC) 25th Anniversary Ivan Lendl Golf Classic to be held Monday, May 18, 2020 at the TPC River Highlands. The tournament supports the HFSC Ivan Lendl Adaptive Sports Camp and year-round adaptive sports programs for children and adults.

Janeace Slifka, Jonathan’s mother, founded the week-long summer day camp with Ivan Lendl’s help in 1991 and started the golf tournament to support opportunities for individuals living with disabilities to participate in both competitive and recreational sports and fitness programs.

“Jon, Janeace and the entire Slifka family have been tireless advocates for athletes of all ages and abilities,” said Lynn Ricci, FACHE, HFSC President and CEO.  “Working together with Ivan Lendl, they have helped us raise the profile of our athletes in the competitive and philanthropic arenas.”

“The camp has been a vehicle by which I and so many others have learned athletic and life skills; and developed relationships and self-confidence that stay with us throughout our lives,” said Jon Slifka.  “The camp has such deep meaning and impact on my family and others as it started with us.”  Slifka, Executive Assistant to the Commissioner of the Connecticut State Department of Aging and Disability Services, has remained actively involved in the camp and sports programs at HFSC.

Titanium sponsor Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc., platinum sponsor Webster Bank and dozens of others will ensure the event, which sold out over a month in advance in 2019, will raise the funds needed to keep the program vibrant.  Master of ceremonies, NBC Connecticut’s Bob Maxon, will also return this year.

The HFSC Ivan Lendl Golf Classic is part of an impressive line-up of spring events at TPC River Highlands that benefit HFSC programs and services.  The April 25, 2020 MahoneySabol 5k at the Travelers Championship and the Travelers Championship, June 22-28, 2020 help support the HFSC ALS Center of Excellence.
