Team Special Care Raced 50+ Miles for Patient Care

January 3, 2024

Team Special Care is a group of individuals from our community that come together to participate in many climbs, walks, marathons, and more throughout the state of Connecticut. We did more than just cross the finish line. Runners, racers, walkers, volunteers, and donors came together to support our rehabilitation programs and spread awareness of certain disabilities/illnesses in 2023. Here’s a recap.

Tom Dore’s Run the Runway 5K

Tom Dore’s Run the Runway 5K benefited our ALS Center of Excellence again this year. Tom Dore fought a courageous battle against ALS in 2017. His friends at Connecticut Parachutists honor his legacy with this charity 5K; the funds benefit ALS Charities. Team Special Care and community members came to race, cheer, tandem skydive, and just have fun observing jump demonstrations. This event raised over $6k.

MahoneySabol 5K at the Travelers Championship

Team Special Care raced at the MahoneySabol 5K at the Travelers Championship a race that runs along fairways and greens of TPC River Highlands. The race benefitted the ALS Center of Excellence which works to enhance and maintain the quality of life of individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This event raised just under $40k.

WTNH CT Style Host Natasha Lubczenko met with MahoneySabol Partner Michael Sabol, and Brian Savo, and ALS patient at the ALS Center of Excellence to learn about the MahoneySabol 5k, and about ALS. Watch here.

Eversource Hartford Marathon

Team Special Care turned our passion for running into a force for good at the 2023 Eversource Hartford Marathon. Hospital for Special Care was a Premier Level Charity Partner of the Eversource Hartford Marathon in 2023. Our marathon initiative supported adaptive sports, autism, ALS, pulmonary and spinal cord care, and other rehabilitation programs – helping rebuild lives every day! Runners and racers of all abilities joined Team Special Care for the marathon, half marathon, 5K, or marathon team relay. Supporters also volunteered, fundraised, and donated. Together we raised over $22.5k, and had 48 racers and 44 volunteers!

Special thanks to our team sponsor:
