MahoneySabol Fights ALS, Supports Hospital for Special Care

May 19, 2021

MahoneySabol tees it up to raise funds for patient care and research through Traveler’s Championship Birdies for Charities platform

MahoneySabol, a Glastonbury-based accounting and business consulting firm, has challenged the public to join them in fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  The firm has made a $15,000 challenge gift to support Hospital for Special Care’s ALS Center of Excellence through the Traveler’s Championship Birdies for Charity platform.

“We joined Hospital for Special Care and the Traveler’s Championship in the fight against ALS more than five years ago to honor Jay Fishman and his courageous battle with this fatal disease.  Together we’ve raised awareness and raised critically needed funds to support patient care and research through the MahoneySabol 5K at the Traveler’s Championship,” said Jim Mahoney, managing partner of the firm.  “Over the years I’ve gotten to know many patients and their families and it’s strengthened my determination to continue this fight.”

Mahoney, joined by ALS patients Brian Savo and Mike Tamburino, has taken to social media this May, which is ALS Awareness month, to return a spotlight dimmed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the patients impacted by this neurodegenerative disease.  “COVID-19 stopped us from coming together to fight ALS at the Traveler’s Championship last year, and it’s impacted our plans this year – but we’re not giving up the fight until there is a survivor, “ said Mahoney.

MahoneySabol’s $15,000 contribution and an additional 15 percent match provided by Birdies for Charity sponsors Webster Bank and Enterprise, serve as leverage to maximize the impact of community gifts.  “Community contributions like these make it possible for us to provide a unique multidisciplinary approach to patient care designed specifically to meet the needs of patients living with ALS.  As one of the largest clinical trial sites in the country for the HEALEY ALS Platform Trial, we are leading the way to a cure,” said Kevin Felice, D.O., Chief of Neuromuscular Medicine at Hospital for Special Care.  “MahoneySabol and the Traveler’s Championship have helped make this possible and have done so much for our patients through the years. We are truly grateful.”

The Traveler’s Championship has welcomed Hospital for Special Care’s ALS patient community to an accessible chalet on corporate row overlooking the TPC River Highland’s 18th green each year.  Patients and their families have been invited to enjoy the tournament, travel the fully accessible course and meet PGA tour champions. “Being at the Traveler’s Championship, creating lasting memories with my family, that’s been priceless,” said Brian Savo, ALS patient and advocate who has become a familiar figure at the PGA tournament.  “The Travelers Championship has also given us an amazing gift of visibility on the local and national stage. That’s helped us get increased funding for care and research and it sends a message to everyone living with ALS that we matter, that our families matter.”
