Hospital for Special Care Recognizes Exceptional Nurse with The Inaugural DAISY Award®
May 31, 2024NEW BRITAIN, CT – Kate Wray, RN has been named Hospital for Special Care’s recipient of the DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. This award recognizes nurses that go above and beyond to provide patients and families with excellence in clinical care and compassion. Nominated by patients, families and colleagues, award recipients are chosen by a committee at Hospital for Special Care.
Kate has served as a registered nurse for over 25 years at Hospital for Special Care. Her composed demeanor and optimistic outlook foster a nurturing and inclusive environment that benefits both patients and colleagues. She was nominated by a patient and their daughter who says, “Kate you have always been there to support new nurses and help them on their journey. You are always diligent with your care; I knew my mom would be in great hands.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System). The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO, and co-founder of the DAISY Foundation said, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced firsthand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet, these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Hospital for Special Care are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
