Hospital for Special Care Launches Renovation to Expand Medical Rehabilitation Capacity and Enhance Patient Experience
October 27, 2026Hospital for Special Care (HFSC) is launching a $3.6 million renovation that will transform an existing inpatient unit into a dedicated medical rehabilitation unit featuring 10 private patient rooms and expanded nursing, clinical, and support spaces designed to meet the needs of today’s medically complex patients. The renovation is expected to be completed around January 2027.
The project represents an important investment in supporting local acute care hospitals looking for appropriate care for patients who need the highest level of medical and rehabilitative services. HFSC is expanding its capacity to provide highly specialized care to individuals recovering from catastrophic illness or injury, including those who require longer stays and intensive rehabilitation. This addition means more patients will have access to HFSC’s high-quality care. Currently, preventable hospital readmissions are 50 percent lower, and HFSC patients discharge back to the community at a rate 2.7 times more often than the national average.
“For every patient who comes to Hospital for Special Care to heal from a catastrophic illness or injury, hope is at the heart of their journey,” said R. Moses Vargas, President & CEO. “This project reflects our commitment to creating an environment where expert medical care, intensive rehabilitation, and personalized support come together to help patients achieve their individual goals for health and independence.”
The renovation will reconfigure the entire unit and include significant infrastructure upgrades. The new space will feature 10 private patient rooms, providing patients and families with greater privacy and a more supportive environment throughout the rehabilitation journey. The project will also increase HFSC’s capacity to care for patients who require longer lengths of stay.
“These enhancements will provide greater flexibility to meet the needs of patients with a broad range of medical complexities,” said William J. Pesce, DO, Chief Medical Officer. “It will help us better serve our local acute care partners by providing their patients greater choice and allowing us to care for more individuals who need specialized, long-term medical rehabilitation.”
In addition, the renovated unit will incorporate new patient communications technology currently being installed throughout the hospital to support connection and engagement. These enhancements will help patients stay in touch with loved ones, access educational resources, and participate more fully in their rehabilitation experience.
