Hospital for Special Care launches Center for Cognitive Health

(Oct. 22, 2018) – Hospital for Special Care (HFSC) will launch its Center for Cognitive Health with support from the Kelser Charity Challenge and with input from leaders in the neuroscience field. The HFSC Center for Cognitive Health will offer a comprehensive outpatient assessment and treatment program for midlife to older adults who present cognitive decline associated with aging, especially Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
HFSC will welcome members of the public to a free event Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018 from 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Howey Conference Center located at 2150 Corbin Avenue in New Britain. Dr. Jennifer Cromer, clinical neuropsychologist, will provide an overview of services available at the center.
“Our cognitive functioning has a significant impact on our overall health and quality of life as we age,” says Dr. Cromer. “As the prevalence of memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia increases, early diagnosis and intervention can make a significant difference for many patients.” Speech and occupational therapy services provided as a part of the multidisciplinary approach to care will be presented by Allison Mesa, CCC-SLP and Robin Tripp, MS, OTR/L, CFE.
Andrew E. Budson, M.D., author of Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory: What’s Normal, What’s Not and What to Do About It, will provide a keynote address speaking to physicians, referral sources, patients and community members about memory disorders and other cognitive health issues during the program’s official launch. Dr. Budson is Chief, Cognitive & Behavioral Neurology and Associate Chief of Staff for Education, VA Boston Healthcare System, Associate Director, Education Core Leader, Boston University Alzheimer’s disease Center, professor of Neurology, Boston University School of Medicine and Lecturer in Neurology, Harvard Medical School.
Kelser CEO and President Barry Kelly will attend the event to present the proceeds from the 22nd annual Kelser Charity Challenge golf tournament held Sept. 11, 2018. Last year, the Kelser Charity Challenge raised $17,500 for the Center for Cognitive Health. “It’s wonderful to see that a year later, this program has gone from the idea stage to being on the verge of opening,” says Kelly.
“We’re privileged to devote Kelser’s flagship charity fundraiser to helping the Hospital for Special Care apply their truly innovative approach to cognitive health,” adds Kelly, whose brother and Kelser founder Bruce Kelly is living with Alzheimer’s.
