Hospital for Special Care Hosts 9th Annual Dr. Marie Gustin Professional Excellence Conference

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (September 3, 2019) – Hospital for Special Care will host the ninth annual Dr. Marie Gustin Professional Excellence Conference, Creating a Culture of Patient and Family Engagement on Monday, October 21, 2019 from 4:30 am – 7:00 pm at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut. The 2019 conference will feature patient and family engagement expert, Dr. Karen Drenkard, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, Senior Vice President, Chief Clinical and Nursing Officer at Get Well Network, Bethesda, MD. At this conference, clinicians, nurses, therapists, other healthcare professionals and academics will learn and envision ways to change healthcare practice to better engage patients and families.

Drenkard is responsible for the clinical direction and brings the voice of nursing to patient engagement and the innovation of technology for nursing practice. Drenkard serves as an editorial advisor to Journal of Nursing Administration (JONA) and Nursing Administration Quarterly (NAQ). She is a member of the Board of Visitors for the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Indiana University School of Nursing, and is a Board of Trustee member for Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the National Academies of Practice. Drenkard received her PhD in nursing administration from George Mason University.

Support for the event comes from an endowed fund created by Dr. Marie Gustin and a sponsorship from the Connecticut League for Nursing.

Dr. Marie Gustin is a distinguished educator, psychologist and former Superintendent of Schools for the Consolidated School District of New Britain. She endowed this lecture series through a major gift to the Hospital for Special Care Foundation in 2008.  In making her gift, Dr. Gustin honored the memory of her parents, Susie and Charles Gustin, who in her words, “walked the path of life with courage and dignity, high principles and the spirit of generosity.” A former trustee of Hospital for Special Care, Dr. Gustin continues to serve in numerous leadership capacities within the Greater Hartford Region and beyond.

Hospital for Special Care is an approved provider of nursing continuing education through the Connecticut Nurses’ Association, an accredited approver through the American Nurses’ Credentialing Commission and will provide 1.25 contact hours at this conference. An application has been made for CRCE through the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) for Respiratory Therapists.
