Hospital for Special Care appoints J. Kevin Shushtari, MD, FHM as Chief Medical Officer

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Jan. 22, 2018) – Hospital for Special Care (HFSC) is pleased to welcome J. Kevin Shushtari, MD, FHM as Chief Medical Officer. Shushtari will provide clinical leadership to ensure safe, effective, high quality care for patients with complex health care needs. He will oversee medical staff and physician relations, admissions, credentialing, infection prevention as well as clinical affiliations.

“Kevin has an incredible background in developing and pioneering new programs to meet healthcare needs in various sectors,” said Lynn Ricci, FACHE, president and CEO, Hospital for Special Care. “He will be a great asset to Hospital for Special Care as we continue to advance state of the art approaches to care for patients with complex medical issues including ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Autism Spectrum Disorders and other challenges.”

Dr. Shushtari brings extensive experience in care delivery and leadership as well as an entrepreneurial background to HFSC. “I am excited to join HFSC’s team of highly skilled clinicians. The hospital has earned an outstanding reputation not only in the region but also nationally, and I look forward to being able to contribute to the mission and growth of this extraordinary organization,” said Shushtari.

Shushtari is a graduate of Connecticut College. He received his Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Medical Studies from Bryn Mawr College and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He completed his internship/medical residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital – Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Shushtari is the founding medical director of the Mercy Inpatient Medical Service, the first fully staffed hospitalist program in the U.S., and he co-founded the country’s first online pharmacy. He comes to HFSC from Sarasota Memorial Health Care System where he was the Executive Medical Director of Post-Acute Services.
