Hospital for Special Care Announces Winners of Juried Art Exhibition

The winners of the Joy of Art Juried Exhibit were revealed during the Hospital for Special Care’s Annual Meeting & Donor Reception on June 26th at the Bristol Event Center. The event highlighted and celebrated the steadfast support and collaboration of the HFSC community, which enables the organization to persist in its mission of delivering high-quality care and support to those in need.

Honorary Jurors

Brett Abbott, Director & CEO of New Britain Museum of American Art – Brett is a specialist in American photography of the 20th and 21st centuries, he has organized more than 30 exhibitions and contributed to more than a dozen publications in the field. Prior to his current position, Brett was Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Forth Worth, where he provided leadership in several areas. Some of his honors include the 2010 Lucie Award for Curator of the Year for the exhibition Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the Sixties, as well as the 2012 Ansel Adams Fellowship from the Center for Creative Photography.

Woon Choi, Painter, Sculptor, Ceramic Artist – Woon is a Korean American artist based in New York, with a background in Traditional Korean Sumi ink painting and Royal Joseon Porcelain ceramics, which she studied with esteemed Korean masters in Seoul. She holds a BFA in Korean ink painting, ceramics, sculpture, and art education from Kong Ju National University in South Korea. She has received awards for her abstract oil paintings and drawings in the Art Students League of NY annual competitions, as well as in various group shows in NYC. Currently, Woon works and teaches in her studios in NYC and West Hartford and volunteers with patients at HFSC. Her husband, Dr. Adrian Chan, is the Co-Director of the HFSC Center for Cognitive Health, and the neurologist in HFSC’s Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center.

The Joy of Art! program organizes year-round exhibitions and supports art groups and activities that help create a sense of community among patients. The program promotes holistic patient-centered healing, by incorporating art into patient care. It offers patients a chance to express their emotions creatively, stimulate their minds, and experience joy during their hospital stay.
