Gift is largest to date in support of outpatient expansion for specialty programs
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Nov. 14, 2011) – The Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Foundation, Inc. has awarded Hospital for Special Care (HSC) $1 million in support of the hospital's $5.9 million capital campaign. The 'Hope Campaign' initiative will fund expansion of HSC's specialty outpatient programs at the hospital's New Britain campus that currently serves more than 30,000 outpatient visits each year.
The Hoffman Foundation's grant is currently the largest single gift to the Hope Campaign, and the new facility will be named: "The Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Outpatient Center." Programs slated for the Hoffman Outpatient Center include primary care for children and adults with chronic illnesses care for Parkinson's disease and other neuromuscular conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). HSC's ALS program with its clinical trials research unit is the only initiative of its kind between New York and Boston.
"Hospital for Special Care is a regional and national leader entirely focused on rehabilitation in highly specialized care for children and adults," said Marion Barrak, President, Hoffman Foundation. "We have long understood the highly-unique and vital role that Hospital for Special Care serves in Connecticut and beyond."
"We are very grateful for this generous and important gift to our hospital," said David Crandall, president and CEO, Hospital for Special care. "Hospital for Special Care's long-established specializations in acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, pulmonary disease, and cardiac care, each contain critical outpatient components.
"Rehabilitation is changing, and in many cases, adults and children no longer need to be hospitalized for long periods of time," said Crandall. "We are serving those individuals that other providers and hospitals will not or cannot. HSC fills a distinctive niche in healthcare for our state and the region, and we will continue to expand programs where there is a community need."
Located in West Hartford, The Maximilian Hoffman Foundation is a long-standing benefactor of HSC. Beginning in 1994, The Hoffman Foundation has provided a total of $1.4 million toward major facilities projects at HSC, including the building of the hospital's 27, 000-square foot Aquatic Rehabilitation and Fitness Center , in 1999.
The Hope Campaign launched in June of 2009, and the public phase will launch in late November.
