New Britain, CT (July 26, 2010) – Hospital for Special Care and McCue Mortgage proudly announce Dorothy Kijewski of New Britain as the 2010 recipient of the M. Gertrude McCue Volunteer-of-the-Year Award. A former patient at Hospital for Special Care, Dorothy gives back to the institution by volunteering in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center five days each week. She interacts with patients and assists with the daily operations of the same rehabilitation center where she herself recovered.
Dorothy’s name, and her distinguished volunteer record, joins 19 other previous McCue award winners on a plaque displayed in the hospital’s main lobby. “What is truly remarkable about Dorothy is that despite some physical challenges she is able to make an impact helping staff and patients, always with an uplifting spirit and smile,” said David Crandall, Hospital for Special Care President and CEO. “She is an individual of integrity whom we can always depend upon.”
The M. Gertrude McCue Award was launched in 1991 by Hospital for Special Care to posthumously honor M. Gertrude McCue, who dedicated over 45 years of service, both as a patient-advocate and friend of the hospital. “Gert” helped found the hospital’s Auxiliary in 1952, as well as its gift shop and thrift store. Gertrude McCue was the wife of the late William D. McCue who founded the New Britain-based McCue Mortgage Company in 1949. Today, the company is managed by their son William J. McCue. Each year, a Hospital for Special Care volunteer is selected who exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and the unwavering service that Gert McCue’s exhibited in her lifetime.
