Patient Stories:Allen Zolty
A few years ago, Allen Zolty of Cromwell was a high-powered labor negotiator. He was respected for his strength as a leader and known as a man “in charge of his life.”
A motorcycle accident left him with a traumatic brain injury that would derail his career and, unfortunately, rob him of life’s simplest pleasures.
Allen would remain in a coma for nearly a month. He had to re-learn everything.
“I had to learn to walk again, talk again and eat again,” recalls Allen. “Hospital for Special Care helped me with my emotional and spiritual recovery, as well as my physical care. I used to keep to myself before the accident. Now people see me as a warm and humorous person.”
Hospital for Special Care specializes in treatment and rehabilitation for severe brain injury patients like Allen. “The staff here was excellent as far as helping me,” says Allen. “I was making progress every single day… and emotionally and spiritually, they definitely got me out of my doldrums.”
With his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law and new baby grandson by his side, Allen slowly regained the love of life that he thought he had lost forever.
Allen’s long road to recovery continues today. He works out with a personal trainer, and his mobility is slowly returning. He travels and enjoys family with whom he’s grown closer. He is a regular contributor to HSC and an active member of the HSC Foundation Board of Directors.
Allen recently celebrated his 60th birthday – a milestone he is happy to have reached.
“When you have your health, you need nothing else,” he adds.
