President and Chief Executive Officer
The Center for Special Care
John J. Votto, D.O., F.C.C.P. is President and Chief Executive Officer at the Center for Special Care, the parent organization of the Hospital for Special Care (HSC). Dr. Votto joined HSC in 1985 and was President and Chief Executive Officer from 1998 through September 2015.
HSC is one of the nation’s largest specialty care hospitals and the only long-term acute care hospital in the U.S. serving adults and children. The hospital is nationally recognized for the advanced care and rehabilitation in the highly-specialized areas of pulmonary care, acquired brain injury, medically-complex pediatrics, neuromuscular disorders (including ALS research), spinal cord injury, as well as a variety of diagnostic, assessment, consulting services for children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Dr. Votto is credited with building the specialty care hospital into a national model of care for complex populations. Dr. Votto, a well-respected national expert in the field, is frequently called upon to offer technical opinions to government payers and policy makers.
Board-Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease, Dr. Votto earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of Connecticut, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Votto served as an intern and completed his medical residency at the United States Public Health Service Hospital after which he completed a fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center Division of Pulmonary Medicine, then moved on to hold a research fellow role in Pulmonary Immunology at the Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center and the University of Connecticut Health Center.
Dr. Votto currently serves as a Full Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine.
Dr. Votto has served on the long-term care and rehab advisory board of the American Hospital Association and is presently Immediate Past President of the National Association of Long Term Hospitals (NALTH). He also has served on several technical expert panels for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). He is published widely nationally and internationally and continues to be a reviewer for multiple medical journals.
