In an effort to give back to those who have served our country, Manes & Motions provides services to America's wounded service personnel and veterans returning from war. This program first began through a grant awarded by the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Program (PTSD) at the Newington Veterans Administration (VA) to look at the benefit of therapeutic riding and its impact on reducing the symptoms of PTSD. The success of the program has led to the Manes & Motions Horses for Heroes initiative. The program provides local veterans with an opportunity to learn or rediscover equine-assisted activities, as we provide a foundation for a positive experience in light of sudden traumatic changes. Our specially trained team of horses, PATH Intl.-certified instructors and many dedicated volunteers strive to improve physically, empower emotionally, and enhance socially the lives of military veterans as they return to their communities following military service. This is accomplished through a variety of equestrian skills, including grooming, tacking, mounting and horseback riding. We offer these services to veterans with post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and other physical, emotional, and psychological challenges that make it difficult to readjust to civilian life.
Through our program, veterans derive significant benefits from equine-assisted activities, which support their recovery from injury and stress. Interaction and control of a horse helps veterans build strength while improving balance, coordination, confidence and self-esteem. Manes & Motions recruits and trains veterans to offer peer support and to assist as volunteers in our program. Veterans are encouraged to volunteer their time as generously as possible.
