Auxiliary Gift Shop
If you like retail and enjoy being with people, the "Little Store", our auxiliary gift shop may be the place for you. We offer flexible hours to accommodate your schedule. This is a great opportunity to interact with employees, patients, and visitors.
Child Care Center
Assist classroom teachers with preparation and implementation of educational and play activities for children ranging in age from infants to preschool.
Clerical
Stamping, filing, collating and copying to support various departments.
Dental
Assist with clerical tasks and support the operation of the dental clinic. This opportunity provides exposure to careers in the dental field.
Equipment Exchange
Volunteers are needed to assist with the receipt of the donated equipment, as well as to coordinate and fulfill requests from individuals needing items. Hours are flexible and training is provided.
Information Desk
Share your outgoing personality when you volunteer at the Information Desk, the hub of the hospital. You will be the first point of contact for visitors to experience the friendly, caring atmosphere that makes Hospital for Special Care unique. You will receive training about many aspects of the hospital and will be able to respond professionally to visitor’s needs. Consider volunteering with a friend; teams of two are always welcome.
Library Guides
The Special Care Resource Center and Health Sciences Library is open to staff, students, patients and their families. Resources are available on an array of subjects about physical disability. With the utilization of volunteers, the hours of the library can be extended. Library Guides greet visitors, assist with location of materials, assist with computers, shelve materials, make copies in addition to other clerical tasks.
Manes & Motions Therapeutic Riding
Manes & Motions Therapeutic Horseback Riding provides many physical, emotional and cognitive benefits to people with disabilities. Join as a "sidewalker" or "leader" to guide the horses. Other volunteers serve behind the scenes caring for the horses, maintaining the facility or helping in the office with clerical tasks.

Pharmacy
College students interested in gaining experience in the pharmacy profession can provide clerical support to the staff, including organization and delivery of medications, while under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Research
Graduate and undergraduate students will have opportunities to participate in directed research projects. They may interact directly with patients and assist with data collection.
Special Care Corner Auxiliary Shop
This retail thrift store is located on Arch Street in downtown New Britain and offers affordable gently-used clothing, household items and furniture to area shoppers. The staff has a lot of fun working together, helping people in the community and raising money for the hospital.
Sports and Fitness Programs
At Hospital for Special Care we believe that people living with physical disabilities should have opportunities to participate in sports, both competitive and recreational. Volunteers help with evening practices in basketball, track and field, swimming. Skiing takes place in January and February on Friday afternoons. Volunteers build friendships, encourage athletes, and share the excitement of their accomplishments. Volunteers can also help with competitions; our teams win national titles!
