HSC provides a comprehensive orientation program for all new clinical employees. Orientation is individualized, accommodating the needs of novice or expert clinicians. An Orientation plan is developed for each new employee, outlining goals and clear expectations for all phases of orientation. Our team of Clinical Resource Consultants, in collaboration with our Clinical Managers, coordinates the orientation process. This group of discipline-specific clinical experts assist the employee by providing additional support and resources, as needed, throughout the orientation period.

The orientation program at HSC is competency-based, utilizing preceptors and/or designated staff as clinical mentors. The duration of orientation is determined by time frames established for the completion of all required goals and competencies.

Orientation is further individualized for staff in the nursing and respiratory disciplines by out “track system”. Each employee is assigned to an orientation track that delineates specific goals, objectives, and expected duration. Track assignment is determined by assessing the employee’s current skill level and prior experience.

Track A

80 clinical hours. Designed for the experienced clinician. Facilitates the completion of orientation requirements through the “Challenge” processes.

Track B

160 clinical hours. Designed for the nurse and/or respiratory therapist with one to three years of clinical experience. The orientee may require new role related skills.

Track C

320 clinical hours. This track is designed to assist the new graduate in adjusting to the work setting. It is also intended for individuals with less than one year of experience or clinicians re-entering the healthcare environment.

The track system helps structure a program focusing on the acquisition of knowledge and information required for the new job role, building on the employee’s individual strengths.
