Established in 1999, Manes & Motions is a PATH International Premier Accredited Center for therapeutic riding, currently providing 1,500 rider sessions in a three-season program. Accomplished and sensitive instructors, aided by more than 100 volunteers, provide equine-assisted activities and horseback riding for therapeutic, recreational, sport and educational purposes. More than 350 special needs riders have participated in the program since its inception.
Located at the beautiful Daniels Farm in Middletown, the program runs from April through October each year. The program is inactive in winter, although our special horses continue to be fed and cared for.
When evaluating the impact of a therapeutic riding program, weather is a major contributing factor. Currently, with no indoor accommodation, this program is shut down for five and one-half months each winter. Additionally, if it is raining, or too hot in the direct summer sun, riders will also have to miss sessions and the opportunity to ride.
The addition of an indoor riding arena, with a covered walkway to the stable, will increase ridership by an estimated 50 percent over five years, virtually eliminating cancellations due to weather conditions. There will no longer be shutdowns due to the winter months and inclement weather. In the spring, our volunteer recruitment push will no longer be required, as volunteers will now be able to serve year-round. And in the summer, the indoor arena will provide shade for our horses, and riders who are sensitive to the intense heat of the sun.
The site plan calls for a 10,580 square-foot indoor riding arena plus a classroom, observation area, offices and restrooms at a cost of $600,000. The addition of an indoor arena opens the doors for improved and enhanced services for all of our riders with special needs.
