NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (January 11, 2011) – The second annual Dr. Marie S. Gustin Nursing Excellence Conference, sponsored through the Hospital for Special Care Foundation and recently held at Central Connecticut State University, attracted over 140 nurses and healthcare leaders from around the state.

This year’s conference entitled, “From Bedside to Boardroom, Empowering the Leader Within You” featured two nationally-recognized nursing educators as guest speakers.  Dr. Daniel J. Pesut, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, Professor and Senior Faculty Fellow at Indiana University School of Nursing, opened the day with “Leadership Consciousness: Being a 360 Degree Leader.” The afternoon session, “Creating a Culture of Nursing Excellence,” was presented by Gen Guanci, MEd, RN-BC, CCRN, a consultant with Creative Healthcare Management in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Both guest speakers have recently published books related to their topics.

Members of the audience described the speakers as “engaging and inspiring,” and one nurse even summed up her experience as “a very helpful, reflective day.” She added, “It made me rethink my position, job focus and professional development.”

Dr. Gustin, of New Britain, is a life-long educator and former member of the Hospital for Special Care Board of Directors. She generously endowed the annual conference to honor the memory of her parents.  The event is facilitated each year by Hospital for Special Care in cooperation with nursing colleagues at Hospital of Central Connecticut and Central Connecticut State University’s Nursing Department.
