NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Oct. 10, 2013) – The Hospital for Special Care Foundation is hosting its 5th annual Dr. Marie S. Gustin Nursing Excellence Conference entitled, “Ensuring Patient Safety and High Quality Cost-Effective Care through Evidence-Based Practice” on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 7:45 am - 3:30 pm in the Student Center-Alumni Hall at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.  The hospital’s partners in this annual lecture are The Hospital of Central Connecticut and Central Connecticut State University.

Dr. Marie Gustin is a distinguished educator, psychologist and former Superintendent of Schools for the Consolidated School District of New Britain.  She endowed this lecture series through a major gift to the Hospital for Special Care Foundation in 2008.  In making her gift, Dr. Gustin honored the memory of her parents, Susie and Charles Gustin, who in her words, “walked the path of life with courage and dignity, high principles and the spirit of generosity.” A former trustee of Hospital for Special Care, Dr. Gustin continues to serve in numerous leadership capacities within the Greater Hartford Region and beyond. 

The 2013 Nursing Excellence Conference will feature two internationally-renowned nursing experts on the subject of evidence-based practice (EBP), leadership and nursing excellence.  Speakers, Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, Ph.D., R.N., CPNP/PMHNP, FNAP, FAA, and Ellen Fineout-Overholt, Ph.D., R.N., FNAP, FAA, have collaborated on numerous EBP projects and co-authored books and publications jointly.  

Currently, Dr. Melnyk serves as the Associate Vice-President for Health Promotion, University Chief Wellness Officer, and Dean of the College of Nursing at The Ohio State University. She is a frequent keynote speaker on the subject of EBP, intervention research, and child and adolescent mental health.   Dr. Melnyk also is Associate Editor of the journal, Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing.   Dr. Ellen Fineout-Overholt is Dean of the Frank S. Groner Endowed Memorial School of Professional Studies & Chair of Nursing at East Texas Baptist University, and is a recognized scholar in the field of EBP.  Her newest book with Dr. Melnyk is Implementing Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses: Real-Life Success Stories.

The conference will be of interest to staff nurses, charge nurses, managers, educators, administrators and other healthcare leaders.  Nursing contact hours will be provided (5.25 hours).  Hospital for Special Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Connecticut Nurses’ Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Commission on Accreditation.
